I'm realizing that perhaps I don't need to share my work on social media platforms as much as I may have thought or been led to believe.
I say that for a couple reasons, mostly based on the "return on investment" that I can finally articulate after a year of sharing things on Bluesky, Mastodon, Cara, and Pixelfed. But the upshot is this: it hasn't mattered.
The honest truth is that I've made maybe 4 sales all year from being discovered through Social Media across all the platforms I use, and the rest of my sales have come from in-person events at my art vending booth.
After the art social media platform Cara was scraped (three times!!) it finally became clear to me that there was no where safe online for artists and creatives to share their work without it getting stolen, simply out of spite. And while a few of my social media posts garnered over 200 likes, and I was gaining about four followers a week across the various platforms, there wasn't actually any purchasing happening as a result of those posts. I was getting exposure, but to what end?
So I'm going to try something different. I'm going to start using my own blog posts to share my work, and share those blog posts to social media instead. I don't need to feed the silos that these platforms have to have in order to keep their walled gardens alive at my own expense of time, energy, and my literal content. Clearly, most of those platforms are too much of a target. Continuing to share my work the way I do on those platforms is asking for it to be taken, with no apparent benefit to me for even doing so in the first place.
So. This I think I'll be making many more blog posts.
Please note that using an RSS reader helps you subscribe to my blog posts. And you can make comments on them, too! If you look below this post, you'll see a comment I made myself!
Onward!
